The Art Collections of New York's Hotels
Though lovers of art and culture think of the city's excellent galleries and exhibition centres, hotels in the area also often have masterpeices hanging on their own walls. Some of the best hotel art collections can be find between the more famous art galleries of New York. Conference venues, hotel restaurants, and suites often have better art than many other city's municipal museums, and is one of the few places in North America where your morning's breakfast can be under the gaze of a Picasso or a Renoir. This article will review the art collections of three of New York's premier hotels: The Gramercy Hotel, The James New York, and the Chambers Hotel.
The Gramercy Hotel
When people talk about hotel art collections, The Gramercy Hotel is one of the first names to come to mind. By any standard, this art collection is impressive, but for a hotel it is top of its class. Located in the centre of New York, conference venues here have Andy Warhols, corridors and exhibition halls have Damien Hirsts, and the suites have Richard Prince. The collection was curated by the Oscar-winning film writer-director, Julian Schnabel, this hotel has some of the crème de la crème of 20th century art.
The James New York
The art collection in The James New York was brought together by the artist and curator, Matthew Jensen, and is unique in that it is built mainly on the talent of the artists of New York. Conference venues and galleries in the hotel connect to what is called the "Corridor Arts Program" where visitors can check out the work of artists with local studios, and learn about new developments in the city's artistic trends - placed in at the pulse of New York's Soho, this hotel is a great starting point for your trip to discover the city's culture and art. They have brought in avant-garde specialist, Helmut Lang, and architecture curator Brad Pitt to create beautiful and unique indoor spaces. Lovers of science and technology inspired art will be stunned by Sarah Frost's permanent art installation, _Qwerty_, made from vintage recycled keyboards.
The Chambers Hotel
This hotel is a great experience for lovers of art travelling to New York. Conference venues, hallways, and guest venues are covered in specially commissioned art, created by the city's local artists. Five foot high strawberry flowers compose murals on the hotel's corridor and the walls are decorated with contemporary primitivist, modernist, abstract and expressionist works from artists such as Katerina Grosse, John Newson, John Waters, Sheila Pop and Nina Bovasso. Furthermore, each guest room has a site-specific piece that was commissioned specifically for that space. In this hotel, its curators claim, "the art of travel and the art of life" come together for a sublime experience.
